THE SWASTIKA has been the symbol of evil ever since it was pinched by Hitler in World War II.
So you'd think architects would avoid using the shape when designing new buildings. However, Google Earth has revealed a surprising number of swastika-shaped structures all over the globe.
But is it accident or conspiracy? More photos after the cut...
Coronado Naval Amphibious Base, San Diego
Surprisingly, this military building was passed by top brasses in the US in the late 1960s. Since it was spotted by Google Earth there have been rumblings about changing the shape, but many think it’s not accidental at all. After the war, some German scientists went to the US to work on the country’s missile programme.
Israeli-American researcher Arvrahaum Segol told The Examiner that he believes the buildings were a tribute to the Nazi inventors of the V1 and V2 rockets used in the Blitz.
Wesley Acres Methodist Retirement Home, Decatur, Alabama
Conspiracy theorists also believe this retirement home is a tribute to German scientists, who worked in nearby Huntsville. Completed in 1980, the original design had two extensions added to it some time later, leaving it looking like the offensive symbol.
Devizes, Wiltshire
This council block in Waiblingen Way is a stone’s throw from Salisbury Plain where the British Army carries out military exercises. The street is also named after the German town twinned with the Wiltshire market town.
The estate was built in the 1960s.
Slotervaart Ziekenhuis, Amsterdam
Built between 1971 and 1976, the huge hospital was held up as the gold standard for healthcare at the time. But the building, in the Tuinstad Slotervaart area of the Dutch city, has a sinister shape that health trusts wouldn’t want to recreate.
Denver Airport, USA
This runway raised some eyebrows when the first planes took off in 1994. Despite the hub sitting in a massive area of 34,000 acres the runway, America’s longest landing strip was seen to have an unfortunate layout.
Du Cane Court, Balham, London
Built before the war, this building has a sinister back story. Hitler was said to love the building and planned to use it as his headquarters in the event of a successful invasion of the UK.
Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya
The doctors living quarters at this Kenya hospital are built in a repeating pattern of swastika’s. Two of the four buildings resemble the Nazi sign and the other two are reversed.
They were built after the war.
